...to replace the A/C condenser and dryer in my wife’s GMC Terrain. I have zero experience. From my google-fu I’ve learned that I need to:
Have shop remove any remaining refrigerant.
Install new components myself.
Have shop evacuate and recharge system with refrigerant and oil.
Does anyone with any experience with this have any pointers, tips, tricks or warning for me?

I’m not sure of the ability of the vacuum pump to get out much of the oil, and so re-adding oil may be a bit guesswork. There are important things to note about the oil if you were doing the recharging yourself or if the system was originally R12, but neither apply in this case so I won’t complicate things.

The equipment at the garage will add oil based on the requirement on the car/compressor. They are pretty idiot proof/ self sufficient as long as the correct weights are plugged in. I would also change the belt while you have it off the compressor.

I ended up shelling out $15 for a service manual that calls out 1 ounce of oil for condenser/dryer replacement.
One shop quoted me $650 to do all the work. Another shop quoted me $200 just to run a vacuum test and recharge of the system. Plus the cost of the part and my time, I’m starting to wonder if I should just let the shop do the work.

As an unfrozen caveman A/C system component replacer, the process of not draining the compressor and letting equipment add oil automatically frightens and confuses me.

The newer equipment for A/C when you evacuate the refrigerant vacuums out pretty much everything including the old oil. I cant remember off hand what the vacuum they can pull is but its pretty darn good. Its a change from the R12 methods but works great and leads to less issues I’ve noticed. Also the systems are required to pull down a vacuum before charging to allow for a leak test to be preformed, so its a good way to make sure that all your fittings are tight.

I think they pull 30lb. So you think it would be a waste to add my own oil if they will just suck it out?

When you have the shop evacuate it ask if the machine auto adds oil.

Welp, I asked one shop while getting quotes if they add the oil or if I should do it. They said, “You’re not replacing the compressor so you don’t need to add oil.” I would believe him if I didn’t have the service manual.
So I guess I’m adding it myself.

I think I’m a little sad right now.. If I had a phone I would call my BIL and check (Shop Manager).
